There are a variety of reasons why owls are associated with wisdom and learning, and therefore school graduation. Some of the reasons are based on their physical characteristics: Their big eyes are reputed to see everything and they're also awake and vigilant at night, just like a scholar who studies until the wee hours. Others are more mythic: Merlin the wise magician is often depicted as having an owl on his shoulder. They're also associated with Athenea, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom in Greek mythology. For all these reasons and more, owls have been forever consigned to representing learning and graduation. And they're cute too.
